hotels/” class=”TPAutoLinks” target=”_blank” >Hotel holidays are beloved by many travellers thanks to the ease of such a stay. There are hotels to match nearly every budget and need – but there’s no denying the thrill of bagging a free hotel room upgrade. Getting upgraded can often seem like an unlikely eventuality to some.

Hotel reservations website LateRooms has shared its top tips online and explained the reason behind the faux pas.

“If you make any special requests at the time of booking, the hotel is likely to assign you a specific room in advance, seriously hampering your chances of an upgrade,” said LateRooms.

“If, on the other hand, you don’t make any requests, you may not be assigned a room until you check in.

“And that’s the time to make a play for your upgrade!”

DON’T MISS

As for enquiring about an upgrade at your hotel, it’s vital to time the request carefully.

This can be to do with both the day of the week itself as well as the time of day.

“It’s an obvious one, but the quieter the hotel, the more chances you’ll have of securing a ‘bump up’ to a better room,” explained LateRooms.

“So travel at off-peak times like on weekdays, or away from holiday times and on or around big events.”

The hotel website continued: “Arrive after 6pm when more rooms become available and the hotel has a better idea of which rooms are likely to stay empty.

“But don’t be too late or those with the power to grant upgrades might have gone home.”

When asking, there could be a good way of going about it to boost your chances.

Firstly – and rather obviously – be nice. “Being polite, pleasant and smiley goes a long way in life, and t’s no different when it comes to bagging a hotel upgrade,” said LateRooms.

Secondly, it could be a good idea to be specific when requesting a room upgrade.

“Do you want a sea view? A bigger room? Internet access? A fridge? Many of these perks are often available in the better rooms, and it will help the hotel staff if they know exactly what you want.”

Lastly, LateRooms recommends asking about the cost of an upgrade.

“If you show willingness to pay for it, the hotel is more likely to listen,” the accommodation website said.
